Simi waves a groovy goodbye to a promiscuous lover

Simi is the ultimate love singer.  And while she may seem a newbie, she has developed an obvious mastery of her sound over nearly a decade, with an album somewhere in that time.

Simi’s dexterity and range find a place in her clear ability as a songwriter, as shown in songs like “Love Don’t Care”, one of the bonus cuts off her recently-released sophomore album, “Simisola”.

On “Angelina”, off that project, these skills come together to create a near-perfect fusion of melody and release.

Love ballads are Simi’s home turf and “Angelina” is no different.

The core theme of Simi's music is love.

Producer, Oscar Heman-Ackah lays a reggae-pop inspired foundation (you may remember Rude’s Magic as you listen) that Simi confronts like she does her lover.

Where you dey since yesterday? I find you go Angelina place”, Simi asks.

Simi chooses a delivery that mocks and regrets in equal turn.

Oscar keeps things simple, except for backing horns that allow her to balance the confidence with some pain in short spurts.

“If you say you wan follow all the girls for the area

Make you follow them go, I don’t care

No be me, you go kill

Simi is a great sound engineer in her own right; her credits include songs off her 2014 EP, “Restless” and all the songs on Adekunle Gold’s debut “Gold” (save for “Sade”). Her work on this record brings the elements together to set an easy groove.

Simi doubles her hustle as a sound engineer.

“Angelina” is a “walk-out-the-door-and-give-me-my-keys” song, and Simi expertly weaves her celebratory, almost empowering story into downcast synths and relaxed drums.

It all comes together as a groovy goodbye to a promiscuous lover that she waves into the sunset.

Breakups might hurt and unfaithful men will break your heart but Simi is confident and on “Angelina” , she wants you to hear all of it.
